The Author
ORDINARY MAN. BLESSED LIFE.
In 1966, John left his grandfather’s farm in Sandstone, Minnesota, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. By September 1967, he arrived in Vietnam, where he was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division—the legendary "Magnificent Bastards."
John fought along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and was wounded during the intense Battle of Dai Do on April 30, 1968. Left for dead, he survived deep shrapnel wounds and earned a Purple Heart. The bonds forged in battle left a lifelong mark, especially after witnessing the loss of fellow Marines he considered brothers.
A Life Forever Changed
In the midst of chaos, a miraculous moment saved John’s life and transformed his path. Months of recovery at Great Lakes Naval Hospital followed. Discharged and deeply affected, it would take him nearly sixty-eight years to share his story.
This memoir is more than war — it’s about redemption, spiritual healing, and reclaiming a life of purpose.
